Operations Manager – Heavy Highway Construction


To continue building on past success and prepare for the future, our client has an immediate opening for a Construction Operations Manager with experience in all aspects of highway, airport and asphalt contracting. This role plays a key part in overall corporate performance by working with the Project Manager Teams to effectively execute the tactics to achieve long term strategy and vision. Success in this role requires exceptional planning and coordination skills to manage field operations and ensure that projects are built to the highest quality while meeting customer budget and scheduling requirements. The Construction Operations Manager will oversee Project Superintendents and Foreman on multiple simultaneous heavy highway projects. To excel in this position, applicants must have a professional communication style and the ability to lead and build high-performing teams in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ensure efficient resource allocation to achieve corporate short and long term goals
  • Oversee construction operations to ensure that projects are built safely to the highest quality standards while remaining on time and within budget
  • Use yearly and mid-year performance reviews to build your team, set expectations, and drive performance
  • Clearly communicate with Division Manager, peers, and direct reports any project issues, and develop solutions and action plans
  • Work with Division Manager and corporate Leadership to develop long range strategic action plans
  • Understand regional market dynamics, and assist in the execution of tactics to enhance corporate performance
  • Assist Estimating and Project Management Team by providing operational insights into upcoming bids
  • Lead with a continuous improvement mindset by developing, enhancing and implementing the tools necessary to perform to the highest standards
  • Develop a robust scheduling system which provides short and long term clarity to key resource demands (trucking, plants, equipment)
  • Drive operational performance and improvements to meet and exceed company and divisional goals using current and future technology platforms
  • Assist in finding and developing talent with the skills and mindset that aligns with corporate vision and values
  • Keep customers informed and engaged on project issues and develop collaborative solutions to problems
  • Provide the necessary clarity, standards, and feedback loops with all direct reports through the completion of the full annual performance review process from the goal setting phase up to and through year-end formal
  • Continue enhancing corporate image in the construction industry as the supplier and employer of choice in New England’s paving construction materials market


  • 8-10 years of experience with increasing responsibilities within heavy highway and airport construction industry
  • Experience in managing and directing large, complex operational teams
  • Experience in long and short them scheduling techniques using current software tools
  • Leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills to motivate teams to meet their full potential
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and act on financial data
  • Exceptional verbal, written and telephone communications skills
  • Provides effective and constructive feedback to help foster teamwork
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management is preferred
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug
